Pilates Cues for Polestar Instructors

There are several methods on how best to cue your Pilates students- an instructor’s personal cueing style is influenced by how they were taught, where they’ve worked and/or trained, as well as simple personal preference. Is there a ‘right’ way to cue to optimise learning, or is it a case of each individual finding what works best for them?

At Polestar Pilates Asia we recommend clear, concise cueing instructions, following Joseph Pilates lessons which emphasised concentrating on the purpose of each exercise. His cueing methods were direct, forceful and concise - taking out the unnecessary words makes your message that much more powerful.

Concise cues keep your students' attention, as well as integrate, and process the cues conceptually and physically. In addition they are typically better understood by speakers of other languages (which is especially important in Asia), and by Pilates beginners.

How do you train yourself to instruct in a concise manner?
One of the best ways to learn not only your teaching style, but how to improve it is by recording your next class, then not only listening to it but transcribing every word you said. Were your cues well thought out? Were they intentional, clear, valuable? Did you allow your students the needed time and quiet to integrate the cues you gave?

Now rewatch the recording, putting yourself in your student’s shoes- how would you feel if you were instructing yourself? Are your words meaningful? Are you speaking with intention? Really think about what cues will be most beneficial to your students or class. Are there any changes needed? The golden rule is to cut everything you’ve said that’s not absolutely necessary to perform the movement.

Here is a great article from Nichole Anderson on the subject - https://blog.polestarpilates.com/7-tips-to-make-your-cues-count-whats-your-fluff/

4 Reasons why Pilates Should be a Priority for you in 2020

With 2020 now upon us, here at Iso Fit Hong Kong we are sure to see some new faces in our Pilates classes. People striving to improve their health, flexibility, lose weight and otherwise improve their fitness level. Pilates is no longer an elite exercise program only for dancers and celebrities- it is recognized by personal trainers, physical therapists, and other health professionals as an extremely effective form of exercise for people of all fitness levels. Here are 4 reasons why Pilates should be a priority for you in the New Year.

1. Mindfulness
When doing Pilates your mind is engaged throughout a specific program of exercises, rather than wandering aimlessly during a workout of repetitive activity. By focusing and concentrating on your body’s movements, you are performing a complete mental and physical workout. In today’s hectic world, we cannot overstate the importance of being able to train your mind to be in the moment.

2. Core activation
Pilates engages the core abdominal muscles, emphasizing the strengthening of the ‘powerhouse’ region – abdomen, back, lower back, inner/outer thighs and buttocks. Strength is achieved through stabilization with a focus on movement and functionality. Pilates concentrates on lengthening, strengthening and toning your body, without adding bulk to your muscles. You cannot build anything without the correct foundation, your body is no different!

3. Improved flexibility
Pilates lengthens and stretches all the major muscle groups in the body, improving flexibility, strength, balance and body awareness. Improving flexibility significantly enhances your performance in daily life, as well as other physical activities, and also help reduce your risk of injury. Using Pilates in conjunction with your other physical activities makes those activities that much more enjoyable.

4. Posture and Spinal Health
Pilates has multiple benefits for your spine and your overall health. Improving your posture often relieves annoying back pain, by strengthening your core muscles, teaching you good spinal alignment, helping you become more aware of your posture, and improving your flexibility. These benefits work together to prevent back pain and help you maintain good posture. Stay young - you are only as old as your spine!

At Iso Fit Hong Kong our clients always come first, and so we design our services to represent the best value for the money. Dress for Success: Layers

Dressing for success is all about putting the right pieces together in just the right way to look your very best. Start by using high-quality suits, fabrics and styles available from La Elite Fashions at 1-E, Mody Road, Tsim Sha Tsui Kowloon, Hong Kong.
Layering is one of the most effective ways to create a great look, as well as being the perfect way to combat the weather, especially if you live in a region where the temperatures can get quite chilly. The problem with layering is that it is very easy to get it wrong. One misplaced piece can throw off your entire look! This is why there are some simple rules that you should follow before you start piling on the layers.

The first rule that you need to follow when layering is to go with no more than 3 visible layers. If you go above that, you run the risk of having a look that is entirely too busy, which could serve as a distraction from your main clothing pieces. Using different fabrics is also a great idea when layering. Adding in different textures and weaves can help make a specific piece really stand out, whilst also creating a definite distinction between each layer.

Items made with thinner fabrics should always be worn closest to the skin, while thicker, chunkier pieces of clothing should be on the outer layers. While this may seem like an obvious rule, there are men out there who routinely break it. One thing to keep in mind here is that you should also be able to wear each layer individually and still have it look good. Choosing a worn old t-shirt as your bottom layer may seem like a fine idea until the weather takes a turn for the better and forces you to start removing layers. All the pieces may not be fully visible, but choose them as though they will be.

When the spring and summer months hit, it’s natural to want to add some layers of color, but you can take this idea too far. One bright piece is fine but having each layer as a bold hue means running the risk of looking like a human rainbow. When it comes to patterns, it's fine to go with something a little different as opposed to maintaining a similar pattern throughout all the layers. Wearing three layers of striped clothing would simply be too busy and distracting, so throw on a solid t-shirt under that striped shirt.

Finally, accessories can also be used for layering, with the lies of ties and pocket squares considered a layer of their own. If you are still a little confused by all these rules and are scared to make the leap into layering, you really should take time to talk to the clothing professionals at La Elite, as they can help you mix and match to perfection. Contact Le Elite Fashions in Tsim Sha Tsui to schedule your fitting, and you’ll be dressed for success in no time!

Essential to Entrepreneurial Success: A Written Business Plan

Primasia Corporate Services has worked with thousands of clients, both International as well as in Hong Kong and Asia. One thing we’ve seen amongst new and aspiring entrepreneurs is that most struggle with putting together a written business plan- and wondering if it's really necessary to have anything written down. Having a written business plan will not only help you to improve your ability to focus on the correct issues (like financials, planning your marketing, operating costs and how-to’s, positioning against competitors etc) but will also aid you in finding the right partners, or investors. In short-- a written business plan increases your chance of business success.

It's no secret that 90% of new startups fail. Follow these actionable business plan tips to be in the other 10%.

1. Design a short company overview document.
Starting a new business means you’ll need to sell everyone on the viability of your idea. Creating a single-page double-sided brochure will not only engage people, but may prompt them to offer support and aid in moving forward.

2. Create a short video promoting your company and/or idea.
You’ll find that even traditional business people will be impressed with a introduction video these days, just be sure to keep it under 2 minutes. Showcase your business focus and idea, as well as your passion and commitment to the project. The first 30 seconds of the video are the most important, so put the key points first. Keep it concise, factual, and think about including a prototype or customer to make the video really special.

3. Prepare your business plan by creating a 20-page document.
This is where you put in all the details and specifics about your concept. How your company will position itself against competitors, finances, etc. This document must cover all the information potential investors will need about your new start-up, in detail. If you are an entrepreneur who doesn't feel comfortable writing, there are many advisors who are available to help, for a fee. Having someone review your business plan is highly advised- they can ensure you have all the proper legal disclosures and content.

Having the business idea is typically the easy part, the hard work- and deciding factor in your new companies success or failure- is in the execution. By completing these three business plan elements outlined above, you will stand out above the crowd and have a much better chance of success.

Primasia: Company Budget Planning for 2020

Since 1987 Primasia has helped thousands of overseas and local clients set up their companies in Hong Kong and China, including entrepreneurs, consultancies, manufacturers, trading firms, start-ups and SMEs. Our experts have extensive experience in the corporate services industry and provide efficient, responsive and high-quality support to our clients. And now, as we approach the end of 2019, we suggest business owners turn their attention to planning for 2020. Planning the future is always a daunting task, but it’s perhaps particularly worrisome for 2020. The economy is booming- but tariffs, global recession fears, and political upheaval all remain to complicate the forecast for many companies.

No matter if you’re just hoping to hold steady or hoping for expansion in the coming year, proper budgeting can help every business accomplish their goals. So, read on for a couple of budgeting tips to keep in mind as we head into 2020:

Focus on your Emergency Fund
Every company should have an emergency fund for those unexpected costs that pop up, but it may prove even more vital to have in 2020. An emergency fund can help get your company back in action right away after a disaster- in fact an emergency fund may be critical. According to FEMA, 90% of businesses that don’t reopen within five days of a disaster will fail within a year. So, as you can see, planning for the “what if’s” may prove to be the best business decision you can make for the coming months.

Pinpoint what investments return the best ROI
ROI, or return on investment, is something you should consider at every level of your company. ROI is especially important for small businesses or those with limited funds. When every dollar counts, ROI takes on an even greater importance. For example, experimenting with marketing - like social media marketing, or influencer marketing - could make sense for your business. These types of campaigns can build your brand, and help acquire new customers. Be that as it may, there are other forms of marketing that are proven to have a better ROI- like email marketing. Surprised? Research shows that email marketing has the best ROI of any marketing tactic because it focuses on things like retaining existing customers and turning them into dependable buyers.

Take this mindset into all levels of your company. What’s going to have the better ROI this month, this quarter, this year?

As a Silver Partner of Xero, Primasia is uniquely set up to help your business transition to Xero, provide Xero training if needed, and assist with audit and tax filing as well as help you understand how your business is performing.
