Employing more women in the workplace is currently a hot topic issue in human resources. As the world is increasingly becoming more progressive and interconnected, building an effective strategy that promotes equality in the workforce is a high priority for most organizations. In the general push surrounding improving the employment status of more women, the global pay gap remains– a 21% pay gap between female and male workers, with women being underrepresented in the C-suite.
The lack of attention to improving the employment status of more women is disturbing when one considers that gender parity is financially advantageous for both companies and society. In a 2010 World Economic Report, it was discovered that the improvement of employment status within the female labor force directly relates to the country’s GDP and international competitiveness.
Here are a few guides that have proven to be effective in improving the number of women in your workforce.
  • Equal pay for equal work is a clear and easy way for companies to level the playing field for both women and men. According to the 2015 World Economic Forum, there still exists a disproportionate gap in what women earn and it is even more persistent on a global scale. Women currently earn what their male counterparts did 10 years ago. And interestingly, it also found out that no country in the world has yet closed this gender gap.
  • All candidates should be asked the same questions. The question “what do you think your salary should be” or “how many hours would you work per week” should be omitted altogether. Instead interviewers should provide a fair and transparent salary range.
  • Try circulating candidate resumes with the names removed— this helps prevent discrimination, and improves the chances of increasing gender diversity in the workplace.
  • Offer equal opportunity: Companies should have strategies in place to ensure that men and women alike are given same platforms to enable them to progress in their career.
