Food is fuel for life. A proper diet helps you find the energy to get through each day, fuels your workouts, improves health and helps with physical fitness. In addition some find that eating certain foods can decrease pain and improve quality of life when living with a chronic illness. Joseph Pilates himself believed that proper diet was part of whole body health:
“Accordingly, it is earnestly suggested that you guide your eating habits with all due respect to the required amount of food and kind you need to keep yourself physically fit, always indicated by your occupation, or lack of it.” - Joseph Pilates via his book Pilates' Return to Life Through Contrology

Obviously there are many reasons why we should pay attention to what we consume each day- processed convenience foods may be easy and tasty, but do nothing to improve our health. Over indulgence in these foods almost certainly puts our overall health in jeopardy. Seeing your food in a different perspective, as medicine for your body, can yield immense benefits and improve overall well-being.

Webster's definition of medicine is  "The science and art dealing with the maintenance of health and the prevention, alleviation, or cure of disease." The nutrients in food facilitate the cells in our bodies to complete their necessary functions. Proper nutrients help maintain health, prevent disease, allows the body to function, and gives our cells the necessary information to complete numerous tasks. In the simplest terms, think of food as being food a source of "information" for the body. Taking this view of food gives us a way to view nutrition beyond calories or carbs, and lets us focus on foods that we should include in our diet. Instead of viewing food negatively, look at it as a way to improve health and reduce disease.

A good diet and consistent physical activity are both very important to a healthy body and mind. Joseph Pilates believed this, and so do we!
