LGBT+Supporters Marched in the Tokyo Rainbow Pride Parade

Congratulations Tokyo! The 2019 Tokyo Rainbow Pride was Japan’s biggest Pride ever with an estimated 10,000 people marching in the family-friendly pride parade, and an additional 170,000 people attending the two-day festival, celebrating equality for all. What a sight to see as rainbow flags and colourful signboards flew high, brightly waving in the clear blue sky as thousands of members of the local LGBT+ community and supporters flooded the streets of Shibuya Ward, in the capital of Japan! This years theme was ‘I have pride aru ga mama o hokorō’, which translates to ‘Be proud of who you are’. TThe Pride was sponsored by a record-breaking 278 companies and organizations, including big names like NTT Corp., Sony Corp. and Google Inc., as well as rapidly expanding media company BuzzFeed and flourishing music streamer Spotify.

The 2019 Tokyo Rainbow Pride marked the 25th anniversary of the first LGBT+ event in Tokyo. The first event in 1994 was attended by about 1,000 people, marching from Shinjuku Central Park to Shibuya Miyashita Park. Now the event has been breaking event attendance records time and again with 7,000+ people dancing in the streets in 2018, and then breaking records again this year with 10,000+ parade attendees.

On the Tokyo Rainbow Pride’s official website  local government leaders have left congratulatory messages, including Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike, Japan Communist Party Secretary-General Akira Koike, Shibuya Ward Mayor Ken Hasebe, and Sapporo Mayor Katsuhiro Akimoto.
