2019 Asian Youth Orchestra Tour -- Taipei, Chiayi City, Taiwan and Seoul, South Korea

Asian Youth Orchestra 2019 Tour -- Taipei and Chiayi City, Taiwan

The new airport check-in pattern at Chek Lap Kok didn’t slow us down that much, but an Amber RainStorm added an hour before we could get away to Taiwan for two concerts in Taipei’s National Concert Hall.

This has been a great tour musically. The repertoire really suited to the Orchestra. Guest Conductor Joseph Bastian’s Brahms 4 is dark and probing, while Richard’s Scheherazade is rich with colours of ancient Persia and stories of a thousand and one nights.

A three-hour bus ride south to Chiayi-City introduced our AYOers to a side of Taiwan tourists rarely seen. This is a homestay event for the Orchestra, beginning with a welcome to Chiayi Dinner and many kind words from the local city mayor. Next on the schedule our AYOers are out with their host families. How generous they are! Our return gift, a beautiful Scheherazade concert played to a full house and was streaming live on YouTube: https://youtu.be/Fo7WcRLO1m8

The tour rolls on. Next stop Seoul, Korea.

Asian Youth Orchestra 2019 Tour -- Seoul, South Korea

Always great to see the bonding that's the result of our homestay project in Chiayi. Here’s the quote that makes our day:

"Had a great time in Chiayi! Thank you home dad for the super good hospitality!”

Bus ride to Taoyuan Airport and we’re on our way to Seoul, returning to Korea for the first time in nine years thanks to a major effort by the Hong Kong Government’s Economic and Trade Office in Tokyo and a rolling out of the Red Carpet by the Sejong Concert Hall, nearly filling the 3000-seat concert Hall. Violin Coach Thanos Adamopoulos whose traveling with us on tour, called it the best hall so far on this tour. Leave it to M. Pontzious and the AYO to pull out all the stops.

Back in the Center the next day for a side-by-side rehearsal event with local young musicians. Thank you AYO for taking it all so seriously and sticking around for a pick-up rehearsal of the Brahms program with M. Bastian, all followed by a much needed free day!!!! Now off to Japan.
