5 Must-See Hong Kong Attractions for First Time Visitors

A trip to vibrant, energetic Hong Kong may be overwhelming for first-time visitors who aren’t used to all the hustle and bustle. Hong Kong is city full of wonders! Whether your scoping out the city that never sleeps before Gay Games Hong Kong 2022, or starting to plan out your trip for the big event, below you’ll find a list of our top 5 must-see attractions in Hong Kong.

Since 1982, the Gay Games have brought together people from all over the world, promoting diversity, respect, equality, and solidarity. Gay Games Hong Kong 2022 will be an opportunity to participate in sporting and cultural events designed to encourage diversity, inclusion, and tolerance across Asia.

The Peak is one of Hong Kong’s most popular attraction for a reason-- Victoria Peak is the highest vantage point ( 396 meters above sea level!) in the entire city and offers breathtaking views of Hong Kong. The Peak is also where we will be unveiling the AIDS Memorial Quilt at the International Rainbow Memorial Run. The International Rainbow Memorial Run is a key Gay Games tradition and has long been an opportunity to raise awareness and to honour the memories of those who have died of AIDS related illnesses.

Hong Kong Park is an oasis of greenery amongst the steel and glass skyscrapers of Central, Hong Kong. This beautiful park contains a 15,000 sq ft conservatory, an aviary featuring over 80 species of tropical birds, the Hong Kong Visual Arts Centre, and a traditional teahouse where you can try an authentic dim sum meal.

The Hong Kong Stadium is the largest outdoor multi-purpose recreation and sports venue of Hong Kong, where most international football matches are held and the Hong Kong Rugby Sevens tournament is hosted. This is also where the #GGHK2022 (Gay Games Hong Kong 2022) opening ceremony will be hosted on Saturday 12th November 2022. The theme “Unity in Diversity – We Welcome You” will incorporate the historical and artistic heritage of Hong Kong as well as the different cultural aspects of Asia as a continent. The Stadium has a maximum seating capacity of 40,000 and is located on Hong Kong Island, near Causeway Bay-- it is easily accessible via public transport.

Pottinger Street, a steep, unevenly-paved pedestrian lane dating from the 1850s, is one of the oldest streets in Central district. Also known as ‘Stone Slab Street’, the unique stone steps have made it a popular location for filming Hong Kong movies and TV series.  Today, the street is lined with colorful stalls selling inexpensive merchandise, party supplies, trinkets and souvenirs.

The International Commerce Centre (ICC) is the tallest skyscraper in Hong Kong with 118 floors. The ICC also serves as a 50,000 square-metre platform for a spectacular light and music show which happens twice nightly, so keep an eye out! This building is also planned to host the Gay Games first-time ever inclusion of Tower Running-- a challenging sport that takes lot of endurance, courage and high-level fitness to succeed!

Gay Games Hong Kong 2022 includes 36 sports events, featuring Dragon Boat Racing, Tower Running on the ICC and Trail Running because Hong Kong has amazing trails to run on.  Also included is rugby, and lots of swimming, and rowing-- local organizations like the rowing association and the yacht club have already pledged their support. By working together, Gay Games Hong Kong 2022 will be an empowering experience for LGBT+ athletes and communities in all parts of Asia to participate on a level playing field with everyone else.

Show your support and stay up to date on all important announcements by following #GGHK2022 on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.

Healthy Pork Recipes to Kick Start Your New Year’s Resolutions!

Every year when January rolls around, everyone starts talking about health and fitness and the words, “New Year’s Resolutions” are everywhere you see. Scan focuses on tasty, healthy foods 365 days a year-- raising animals naturally year-round produces the highest quality, best-tasting pork imaginable! So whether your focus is on maintaining good health, losing weight or enjoying great taste-- look no farther than your local supermarket or favorite world-class restaurant. You’ll find Scan’s tasty high-quality pork on sale at ParknShop’s across Hong Kong as well as on over 40 local restaurant menus. Here are four healthy pork recipes to kick start your New Year’s resolutions:

This main dish is full of delicious Nordic flavours and ready to eat in less than 30 minutes! Hazelnuts are a rich source of vitamin E, folate, potassium, calcium and magnesium-- giving you healthy skin, hair and nails and boosting your metabolism. Serve this dish warm with your favorite healthy side dishes.

This meat recipe comes from Executive Chef Jaakko Sorsa of FINDS, Hong Kong’s premier Nordic Restaurant. Recently Chef Jaakko prepared mini appetizers of this dish, using Scan flower-fed pork, for shoppers at Taste ParknShop in Kowloon. Now you can make this delicious, extremely tender Slow-Roasted Pork with Apple Mustard recipe at home!

Invite friends and family over for delicious roasted pork and a tasty, yet super simple salad. If you roast the Scan pork and marinate the vegetables the night before, this meal can come together in as little as 15 minutes! We love quick recipes like this, that make family occasions easy to celebrate along with being full of fresh, delicious flavours.

This main dish does take time to prepare-- as any good pot roast does, but the flavours and taste are well worth the time spent! Be sure to use authentic Black Lava Coarse Salt, high quality coarse salts are an essential part of every Nordic Chef’s toolkit!

A unique feature of Scan’s delicious pork, is that our pigs are flower-fed-- we add Brassica napus seed (bright yellow flowers that produce oil-rich seeds that are one of nature’s best sources of Omega 3) to the feed of our pigs. This ensures that our tasty, flower-fed pork contains four times more Omega 3’s when compared to conventional pork. Since Scan pork is loaded with high quality Omega 3 fat, it’s exceptionally quick to prepare and stays juicy and tender any way you cook it.

Polestar Pilates Asia 2018 Winter Seminar

The Polestar Pilates Asia Winter Seminar is back! This world-class 2 day Pilates workshop is not to be missed, so register quickly! Held in Tokyo, Japan from 3-4 February 2018, this year’s workshop includes well-known presenters Kim Gibilisco and Lisa Anthony as well as a lineup of familiar Japanese presenters and educators. Below, you’ll find a brief overview of 3 of the many workshops being held. This course will issue 8 Continuing Education Credits (CEC) for those attending for 1 day and 16 CEC for those attending for the full 2 day seminar.

Contact Polestar Japan for more information and registration via info@polestarjapan.org or click here for more information here (Japanese only).

Kim Gibilisco is well known amongst those who attended the 2017 Polestar seminar in Bali, where she was very popular with the participants. Back again for the 2018 Polestar Pilates Asia Winter Seminar, Kim will be presenting 2 of her most popular and relevant workshops:

Biscuits to Bananas calls upon the dancer terminology of taking a rigid foot, aka “a biscuit”, and transforming it into a strong, mobile foot, “a banana”. Appropriate for all levels of movers, this workshop is designed to make foot/ankle mobility techniques developed by professional dancers more accessible to people from all walks of life. Emphasis will be placed on how Pilates exercises can influence asymmetries. Students will refine their interpretation skills appropriate for their scope of practice and how to apply this information to design a safe and effective program or when to refer the client to the appropriate care provider.

Hip Me with your best shot is designed to enhance your understanding of the various challenges encountered, as well as viable solutions, when working with clients with labral pathologies.  Utilizing Pilates mat and equipment, participants of this workshop will understand the rationale behind re-education strategies using the Pilates repertoire and apparatus. This workshop is appropriate for Pilates Practitioners, Physical Therapists, and healthcare professionals.

If you attended the 2017 Winter Seminar, Lisa Anthony will be a familiar face! Lisa is returning after many requests for her to present again, and will be leading her popular 1-day workshop on the Thorax.

With recent advances in both scientific research and physiotherapy, the role of the thorax in whole body movement has shifted. Previously only thought of as a rigid spinal area to protect the underlying viscera, the thorax is now known to be a highly mobile, flexible region of the body playing a fundamental role in shock absorption, whole body alignment, and abdominal muscle recruitment. In this workshop the Pilates instructor will learn:

  • the anatomy and osteokinematics of the thorax
  • the function of the thorax in whole body movement
  • mechanisms of thoracic mobility and dynamic stability
  • the role of this region as the body’s centre of rotation
  • how to assess the thorax for alignment function, mobility, and control
  • effective cueing to facilitate recruitment of the deep controlling mechanisms of the thorax for optimal mobility and control
  • positional release techniques in the Pilates studio to decompress the thorax to promote successful whole body movement in a Pilates session.

Register now by contacting info@polestarjapan.org and including your name, student number and whether you'd like to attend Saturday only, Sunday only, or the full 2 day seminar. We hope to see all of you there!

Audition and Practice Advice for Aspiring Musicians from Asian Youth Orchestra Faculty

Every Spring, The Asian Youth Orchestra(AYO) holds their yearly auditions for aspiring young musicians across Asia to join them for six weeks each summer, initially for a three-week Rehearsal Camp in Hong Kong, followed by a three-week international concert tour with celebrated conductors and solo artists. Below, you’ll find audition tips and advice directly from the AYO International Artist-Faculty-- covering everything from the best ways to practice, to performing at an audition. As you will read, using a metronome is essential!

The 100 members of the Asian Youth Orchestra are chosen from mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. Candidates age 17-27 years old perform an orchestral excerpt and a piece of a composition of their choice for a panel of jurors from the AYO Faculty.  For information on the times and locations for the Asian Youth Orchestra 2018 Auditions, please click here to visit our website or speak with your local representative. Apply quickly to avail this unique opportunity. Good luck!

Yu Sun, AYO Viola Faculty
"The most important tip I can give future AYO applicants is to always listen to the recording before you begin practise. This will save you a great deal of time and helps your musical interpretation to be more precise. In addition, I recommend you always use a metronome while practising- every time. And lastly, practise with different tempi, this gives you the flexibility to adjust your music in a variety of different circumstances."

Anna Kwan, AYO Cello Faculty
"Rhythmic accuracy and precise intonation are very important, but equally important is demonstrating that you can project the correct style and tone of the music. Students should review several recordings to get a sense of the tempo and articulations. Practicing with the metronome always helps!"

Rhonda Rider, AYO Cello Faculty
“When it comes to an audition, you have approximately 12 minutes to convince us that you’d be a great addition to the Asian Youth Orchestra. Don’t waste any of those precious minutes! Before entering the audition room, be sure that you are fully prepared to start playing, immediately. This may include: having your endpin out or your shoulder rest on, bow tightened, instrument tuned and your music in order. Practice your audition, and not just the music. Imagine you are walking into the room, greeting the panel, then play through your first piece. How did it go? What could have been better? Try it again. It’s all about preparation and showing us your best.”

Shannon Chieh, AYO Harp Faculty
"There is an excellent article online that all harpists should read-- (click here). This link covers pretty much all the advice I would give to all the auditioning harpers. Please read it thoroughly and I am sure it will offer great help for your preparation.”

This year, AYO Summer Festival/Rehearsal Camp will be held in Hong Kong from 14 July to 2 August 2018. Performances from 3 to 26 August 2018 include concerts in China, Hong Kong, Philippines, Taiwan and Japan. Stay updated by following us on Facebook, you can also see the updated 2018 Tour Schedule here.
