5 Must-See Hong Kong Attractions for First Time Visitors

A trip to vibrant, energetic Hong Kong may be overwhelming for first-time visitors who aren’t used to all the hustle and bustle. Hong Kong is city full of wonders! Whether your scoping out the city that never sleeps before Gay Games Hong Kong 2022, or starting to plan out your trip for the big event, below you’ll find a list of our top 5 must-see attractions in Hong Kong.

Since 1982, the Gay Games have brought together people from all over the world, promoting diversity, respect, equality, and solidarity. Gay Games Hong Kong 2022 will be an opportunity to participate in sporting and cultural events designed to encourage diversity, inclusion, and tolerance across Asia.

The Peak is one of Hong Kong’s most popular attraction for a reason-- Victoria Peak is the highest vantage point ( 396 meters above sea level!) in the entire city and offers breathtaking views of Hong Kong. The Peak is also where we will be unveiling the AIDS Memorial Quilt at the International Rainbow Memorial Run. The International Rainbow Memorial Run is a key Gay Games tradition and has long been an opportunity to raise awareness and to honour the memories of those who have died of AIDS related illnesses.

Hong Kong Park is an oasis of greenery amongst the steel and glass skyscrapers of Central, Hong Kong. This beautiful park contains a 15,000 sq ft conservatory, an aviary featuring over 80 species of tropical birds, the Hong Kong Visual Arts Centre, and a traditional teahouse where you can try an authentic dim sum meal.

The Hong Kong Stadium is the largest outdoor multi-purpose recreation and sports venue of Hong Kong, where most international football matches are held and the Hong Kong Rugby Sevens tournament is hosted. This is also where the #GGHK2022 (Gay Games Hong Kong 2022) opening ceremony will be hosted on Saturday 12th November 2022. The theme “Unity in Diversity – We Welcome You” will incorporate the historical and artistic heritage of Hong Kong as well as the different cultural aspects of Asia as a continent. The Stadium has a maximum seating capacity of 40,000 and is located on Hong Kong Island, near Causeway Bay-- it is easily accessible via public transport.

Pottinger Street, a steep, unevenly-paved pedestrian lane dating from the 1850s, is one of the oldest streets in Central district. Also known as ‘Stone Slab Street’, the unique stone steps have made it a popular location for filming Hong Kong movies and TV series.  Today, the street is lined with colorful stalls selling inexpensive merchandise, party supplies, trinkets and souvenirs.

The International Commerce Centre (ICC) is the tallest skyscraper in Hong Kong with 118 floors. The ICC also serves as a 50,000 square-metre platform for a spectacular light and music show which happens twice nightly, so keep an eye out! This building is also planned to host the Gay Games first-time ever inclusion of Tower Running-- a challenging sport that takes lot of endurance, courage and high-level fitness to succeed!

Gay Games Hong Kong 2022 includes 36 sports events, featuring Dragon Boat Racing, Tower Running on the ICC and Trail Running because Hong Kong has amazing trails to run on.  Also included is rugby, and lots of swimming, and rowing-- local organizations like the rowing association and the yacht club have already pledged their support. By working together, Gay Games Hong Kong 2022 will be an empowering experience for LGBT+ athletes and communities in all parts of Asia to participate on a level playing field with everyone else.
