Health Benefits of Music

"Music in itself is healing, it's an explosive expression of humanity we are all touched by. No matter what culture we're from, everyone loves music." -Billy Joel
Music can connect us with moments of joy, sadness or any number of emotional moments, memories and reactions. This intense connection has deep roots in human mind, which not only brings back certain memories, but also affects the general health of an individual in a positive manner. No one understands these moments more than dedicated musicians- including the Asian Youth Orchestra (AYOHK) with whom the idea of music eliciting emotion is engraved in its essence as they work to improve the overall life quality of young musicians around Asia.
While music is often associated with entertainment, it is certainly more than fun. Here are some of the health benefits music can provide:

  • Reduce Pain and Anxiety: Scientific research has claimed that music can actually ease pain. While the exact mechanisms remain unclear, many researchers believe one reason is because listening to music triggers the release of opioids in the brain, the body's natural pain relievers.
  • Stress Relief: When feeling stressed, you may find listening to your favorite music makes you feel better - and there are numerous studies that support this effect. Listening to your preferred music can make you feel better because the rhythms of music synchronize with your internal beats and pulses to imply a calmer effect. Moreover, it also depends upon what sort of music you’re listening to as stimulating music elevates your body mechanism, while a slower, more relaxing rhythm lowers it.

Bonus Tip: Music's effect on heart rate and its potential as a stress reliever has some researchers to believe music may also be effective for treating heart conditions.

  • Music and Memory: Specific songs have the ability to remind us of certain periods or events in our lives - some that make us smile, and some we would rather forget. This has led to increasing research as to whether music may aid memory recall, especially for individuals with dementia. Try including music in your daily routine- it may lead to betterment of mood as well as improving working memory.

Are you surprised music can be so beneficial to your health? The musicians at AYOHK aren’t! Join with them to help the Asian Youth Orchestra grow - recruit more people and reach out to a wider audience. Spreading the benefits of music throughout Asia!
