Record number of LGBT+ Athletes Compete at 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang

The 2018 Winter Olympics has been one of the most positive for the LGBT+ community with athletes being more open and public about their sexuality than ever before. #Pyeongchang2018 included 15 publicly out LGBT+ athletes, which more than doubles the seven from the 2014 Winter Games hosted in Sochi. After watching the Winter Olympics we are looking even more forward (is that possible?!) to Gay Games 11 Hong Kong 2022, where athletes from every walk of life will come together to compete, enjoy camaraderie, and showcase Hong Kong’s long and colourful history and culture– all while empowering tens of thousands with the transforming benefits of sports competition.  

The 2018 Winter Olympics were incredible, and had such an positive impact across the globe!  Here are a few of the highlights:

Canada’s Eric Radford (Top Image) became the first out Olympian ever to claim gold at a Winter Games. Radford won gold in the team figure skating event, along with his skating partner Meagan Duhamel.

On opening day Freestyle skier Gus Kenworthy set the wheels in motion with a Twitter post picturing him with Rippon‏, stating: “We’re here. We’re queer. Get used to it.”

The U.S. Olympic team was a tour de force of diversity with three LGBT+ athletes and 4 different ethnicities represented on the U.S. figure skating team.

Being an out LGBT+ athlete come with responsibility; the responsibility of being a beneficial role model to the community. Sporting events that promote diversity and acceptance are crucial to supporting our friends and neighbors– beyond sexual orientation, gender, age and other factors. These Olympic athletes can, and should, be proud of their accomplishments, and will hopefully make life easier for those in the next generation.
