The Study of Music

The Asian Youth Orchestra has many wonderful musicians who have achieved so much in the world of music. There is something about music that brings out the best in people,  including creativity and also the many different emotions that are generated when people play or listen to music. There are so many different styles of music and a vast variety of musical instruments to choose from!

Now, there is a big difference between studying music and listening to music. Studying music has to do with learning how to create music either for yourself or for others. The benefits of studying music are arguably more than the benefits of actually listening to it.
The benefits include:

Focus

Studying music requires great concentration. One would need to listen to every beat, every tiny sound and this is because each tiny sound combines together to create the music. A missing beat can wreak havoc on the entire song!
Music requires practice and the more practice a student of music makes, the more focus one develops. And focus, when applied to any venture, leads to success.

Coordination

In music, coordination means using the parts of the body to work effectively together to create music. For example, when playing a guitar or a trumpet, the fingers, the arms, the wrists, the mouth, the brain, etc., all work together to create beautiful music. One must place one’s fingers exactly or it sounds wrong. When things go wrong, a musician must be able to spot where the change occurred and get back on track. This is a valuable skill in life.

Perseverance

You have likely listened to talented musicians, in a variety of genres and instruments. Skillful playing doesn’t just happen on it’s own, there is much practice and repetitive drill work that goes on to create something that seems effortless. This perseverance, ie learning to keep at something until it is perfect, is a vital skill that can be applied in many areas of life.
