Yes, International Pride Month has come and gone but in reality, LGBT+ pride should be exercised every day. Not just in the month of June when so much attention is focused on the huge parades hosted by many cities. The world needs, now more than ever, just a little more love when so much is up in chaos. There are many reasons Hong Kong should host the 2022 Gay Games, and changing cultural, social and political attitudes towards LGBT+ people across Asia is definitely one of them. The international legacy the Gay Games has built over the last quarter century is quite significant, empowering tens of thousands with the transforming benefits of sports competition across the globe,

International Pride Month is important to many people for many different reasons. For some it’s a time to let loose and celebrate, for others it’s a platform for protest, and for many, probably most, it’s a bit of both. A lot of progress has been made since the Stonewall Riot of 1969, which sparked the US’s LGBT+ community to commemorate, celebrate and protest rights and societal issues; but there are still many issues that need to be addressed and solved.

In 1991 homosexuality became legal in Hong Kong; however, anti-discrimination laws are limited, gay marriage is not legal in Hong Kong, and existing same-sex marriages are not formally recognised. The gay community continues to lobby for equal rights for same-sex unions and anti-discrimination legislation and social recognition of same-sex couples. Many locals are hopeful that hosting the 2022 Gay Games could be a stepping stone toward finally legalizing LGBT+ marriage in Hong Kong.
