A whirlwind of activity happened recently as the Federation of Gay Games (FGG) site inspectors visited Hong Kong to assess the city’s ability to host Gay Games Hong Kong 2022. This included 3 and a half days full of breakfasts, business meetings and inspecting 42 sport and cultural venues in Hong Kong along with a community reception at PMQ (aka party!). In addition to the sporting and cultural venues, community support was also a huge factor is evaluating Hong Kong’s readiness to host such a monumental event. We’re happy to report- the support was nearly overwhelming! Thank you so much for all your support and helping make the inspection such a success!
The FGG will announce the 2022 host city in November 2017.
Nearly double the number of expected attendees were at a breakfast forum, held at Hong Kong’s famous China Club, for supporters of Hong Kong’s bid. This included guest speaker Peter Reading, lead counsel for the Equal Opportunities Council of Hong Kong, whom provided a briefing on LGBT and civil rights strides in Hong Kong. As well as local legislators, the Hong Kong Tourism Board and other ambassadors, sporting and community leaders and businesses.
Other activities included checking out the beautiful concert facilities at City Hall, Victoria Park tennis and swimming facilities, and the Hong Kong Stadium home to the world famous Rugby Sevens! The stadium is strategically situated in a low traffic area and is accessible directly by the highly reliable and safe MTR. Getting to and from the stadium is no more difficult than a walk to your corner convenience store.
We crossed to the south side of Hong Kong island to see the Stanley Beach followed by The Hong Kong Royal Yacht Club’s world class facilities on Middle Island. The facilities regularly host regattas of 60 or more sailing boats at a time all owned, maintained and provided by HKRYC. We finished the day 2 whirlwind tour with a must-see stop at Victoria Peak. If a single image could encapsulate Hong Kong, it would be the panorama from Victoria Peak. Looking down at the city from this famous vantage point, you'll see one of the finest harbors on Earth and the brilliant Hong Kong skyline.
It was nearly time to say goodbye to the FGG inspectors, but we couldn’t let them leave without a party- Hong Kong style! More than 60 local businesses brought banners to show their support and PMQ filled quickly with nearly 700 supporters crossing age, gender, ethnicity and orientation. Hong Kong clearly met the challenge to show its melting pot mentality and demonstrated that diversity rocks!
