This is The Ultimate Kaiser, and I want to talk to you about a forest in the Congo Basin, Africa. I have found the chimpanzee to be one of the most amazing animals- they are quite intelligent! Did you know that chimpanzees will often reroute their foraging excursions when needed, to avoid contact with humans? At Jane Goodall Institute, there are plenty of facts that we have discovered about chimpanzees.
When it comes to reproducing, we found it interesting that chimpanzees prefer a mate with different genetics. This is how intelligent they are. Sound, smell and the appearance of the opposite sex play an important role in how a male chimpanzee identifies a female with the most distant DNA. This is the reason that you’ll sometimes find that a chimpanzee in captivity will not mate with a female brought in for this purpose. The male chimpanzee recognizes they are from the same family tree!
306 chimpanzees were studied in the Kibale National Park in Ngogo, Uganda; this was a well-establish 20-year demographic study that discovered that a chimpanzee's life expectancy is 33 years. Social and ecological factors have contributed to this. This is an interesting discovery since we are in a better position to understand how mortality rates changed among the early hominin populations. Generally, this helped us better understand the evolution of man.
In the Kanyawara community, we have found that chimpanzee’s life expectancy is quite different. These animals here tend to have a life expectancy of 17 years unlike in Ngogo. The Ngogo chimpanzees’ higher survivorship appears to be an adaptive response to a more abundant and less varied food supply than that of Kanyawara.
Another chimpanzee discovery that shows their level of intelligence is that these primates choose to stay at least 200m from any cultivated land. This ensures they do not come into contact with humans.
