team of local Hong Kong LGBT+ basketball players to travel to the upcoming 2018 Gay
Games in Paris. Kinn would like to invite anyone who is interested in joining their team at
Gay Games Paris 2018 and/or Gay Games Hong Kong 2022 to contact him via his Line
Account (QR Code below). Since 1982 the Gay Games have built an international legacy of
changing cultural, social and political attitudes towards LGBT+ people across the globe-- all
while empowering tens of thousands with the transforming benefits of sports competition.
Hong Kong will become the first Asian city to host the world’s largest LGBT+ sports and
cultural event (Gay Games Hong Kong 2022) in November 2022 and we are highly
encouraging everyone to attend the next Gay Games in Paris, hosted from 4 to 12 August 2018.
Read on for our short interview with Kinn Wong below, as well as his Line Account QR Code
for contact purposes.
Does your Basketball team have a name?
We do have a team name, but some of our members work in sensitive fields and are not out.
It’s very sad, but I need to protect our teammates. Let’s call our team “W” for now.
Are there any LGBT+ Basketball leagues in Hong Kong or Asia?
I’ve never heard of any in HK or Asia, though our team did attend a gay sporting event in
Taiwan a few years ago. They had volleyball, basketball and badminton, etc.
Do you play against straight teams?
Yes, we do. Several of us, including myself, also play in a straight team as well as our
LGBT+ team.
Why do you think it’s important to have an LGBT+ Basketball team in Hong Kong?
One of the best things about us is that no one actually created this team, we simply all love
playing basketball and meet up together weekly. Eventually we started playing in some
amateur leagues and that’s how the team started! I’ve never really thought about whether our
team is important to Hong Kong or not, we are just a group of friends with common
interests-- basketball and men!
Not yet! I will have to discuss that with my teammates, we are still not sure if we'll have
enough people to create a team for Paris2018 yet. That’s one reason we are reaching out to
GGHK2022, we are hoping to have more people interested in joining us to form a full
Basketball team from Hong Kong!
Can people interested in learning more about LGBT+ Basketball in Hong Kong and/or
interested in signing up for the Paris team contact you? If so, what is the best way?
Yes! Anyone who is interested in joining us is more than welcome to contact me. Adding my
at my Line account (QR code below) is best.
Kinn Wong today! With a population of nearly 7.5million people in Hong Kong, it should be
easy to fill a basketball team or three, so contact Kinn Wong and get practising!
