Hailing from the woodwind family, the flute is one of the oldest instruments around, and one of the most diverse. With practice and knowledge, you can master this amazingly versatile musical instrument.  The flute didn't always look the way it does now, it used to be made out of wood. Once Theobald Boehm crafted the first flute out of silver in 1830, composers started taking notice of the revolutionary new sound. Since then the flute has been crucial to the progression of classical music, becoming one of the dominant solo instruments in classical music today.

Versatility
While flutes are perfectly at home in the orchestra, you can also find them quite frequently played in jazz, folk, and world music. So, whether you dream of being a part of a famous orchestra or in a jazz band, the flute is perfect for you. Be sure to set aside time next year to enjoy the Asian Youth Orchestra’s summer festival or global concerts and have your mind blown away! This year, the Summer Festival will be held in Hong Kong from 14 July to 3 August 2018. Performances in Beijing, Shanghai, Suzhou, Jiangsu, Xian, Hong Kong, Taipei, Chiayi City and Tokyo will be held from 3 to 26 August 2018.
