Hailing from the woodwind family, the flute is one of the oldest instruments around, and one of the most diverse. With practice and knowledge, you can master this amazingly versatile musical instrument. The flute didn't always look the way it does now, it used to be made out of wood. Once Theobald Boehm crafted the first flute out of silver in 1830, composers started taking notice of the revolutionary new sound. Since then the flute has been crucial to the progression of classical music, becoming one of the dominant solo instruments in classical music today.
Here are three reasons why the flute is one of the most popular instruments amongst musicians:
Versatility
While flutes are perfectly at home in the orchestra, you can also find them quite frequently played in jazz, folk, and world music. So, whether you dream of being a part of a famous orchestra or in a jazz band, the flute is perfect for you. If you love the bond you create with your flute, it might even get you a ticket into the Asian Youth Orchestra!
If you aren’t a performer that’s okay too. The flute is the perfect way to step away from work to relax and play music for yourself.
Easy Maintenance and Portability
Another great feature of the flute is that it's convenient to transport since it doesn't require much space. If you’re traveling with it, you don’t have to buy it an extra seat on a plane!
The flute is also easy to maintain-- no worries about reeds, temperature, or humidity. Simply assemble it together, and you’re ready to play!
Exercise Your Brain
Playing the flute is a great way to give your brain a workout, through reading music, listening, playing and developing fine motor skills.
If you already enjoy singing, and can read music, you’ll likely find the flute even easier to pick up. Flutists breathe exactly how vocalists breathe, and require the same type of air support to create good sounds.
