of the successful bid team that won the right to host the 2022 Gay Games in Hong Kong.
Siu-Fung is a transgender rights advocate, and competitive female bodybuilder, who
identifies as gender queer. Although #GGHK2022 is four years away, Siu-Fung is already
excited about competing in the games in his home city and sees it as a major milestone for the
LGBT+ movement in Hong Kong and also throughout Asia. Siu-Fung hopes to send a
positive message to the transgender community in Asia within the bodybuilding event. A
third category, besides male and female, will be added-- either a transgender category or a
category where you don’t have to assign any labels to yourself.
“I hope if anyone is struggling with their gender and sexuality they will see that they are not
alone, and they will never be alone.” - Siu-Fung Law
A few years ago Siu-Fung Law identified as a trans-man, but now identifies as
“genderqueer”. This identity comes from the belief that gender identity is fluid. This
transition happened over time, but started when Siu-Fung began to enter female bodybuilding
competitions. In his normal, everyday life Siu-Fung uses the male bathroom and people refer
to him as a “he.” But in the bodybuilding world Siu-Fung is a “she,” because his legal
documents still say “female” on them. Siu-Fung has experienced the struggle for transgender
equality in Hong Kong first hand as a transgender athlete. He actually began bodybuilding as
a way to reshape his body rather than undergoing surgery. Siu-Fung has taken these
experiences and through them, learned to love his female identity as well as his masculinity.
Now Siu-Fung doesn’t see himself as either a man or woman, preferring to not be shackled
by the binary construction of gender that society imposes on us.
“Bodybuilding allows me to explore and transcend these boundaries. Before my first
competition it was a huge challenge for me to wear a bikini and perform on stage with
confidence, as I wanted to be seen as a man. I learnt to remove the binary labels we give
clothes and treat the bikini as a costume. Now I get excited to wear beautiful bikinis on stage,
although I wouldn’t wear them on the beach”- Siu-Fung Law
Hong Kong will become the first Asian city to host the world’s biggest international sporting
and cultural event for all in 2022-- featuring athletes and artists with different sexual
orientations, gender identity, and gender expression. Promoting equality and inclusiveness for
empowering experience for LGBT+ athletes and communities in all parts of Asia to
participate on a level playing field with everyone else.
