This weekend be prepared for the Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon, beginning
21.01.2018. This event has evolved over time from it’s beginning in 1997 with just over
1,000 entries to becoming a signature international sporting event with over 74,000 runners
this major sporting event run by the Hong Kong Amateur Athletic Association and hope to
see many of you there to join us! The race is very inclusive and includes the following races:
Marathon, Half Marathon, 10KM Race, Youth Dash, Family Run, 3KM Wheelchair Race and
10KM Wheelchair race. Every runner will be able to enjoy running on the most scenic roads
in Hong Kong with an amazing atmosphere of spectators cheering along the way.
While we love to run for fun (and enjoy the fact that local running culture is getting more
popular and more mainstream), the prize money is nothing to sneeze at either! There will be
USD300,000 in prize money awarded to the top runners, with the first three Challenge race
participants who are permanent residents of Hong Kong awarded Special Prize Money.
One of the key messages the Hong Kong Amateur Athletic Association would like to
promote is to keep encouraging people to exercise in their everyday life. Daily physical
exercise is extremely important to both good physical and good mental health. It is very
important to have sufficient rest and proper recovery exercise after the race as this can lower
your risk of injury and eliminate fatigue. Here are a few good tips for recovery after the race:
Do not stop immediately after the race, no matter how tired you are or how hard it is to lift
your legs, you must keep walking.
Runners should have a full-body stretch after the race and may consider using massage cream
to speed up blood circulation and ease muscle pain.
All the glycogen stored in your body will be used up by the time you finish the race,
therefore, runners should replace the loss of fluid, electrolytes, carbohydrates and proteins by
eating and drinking well. As for replenishing food and drinks, bananas are a good alternative
to sports drinks. A single banana can provide around 100 calories and a rich supply of starch
and electrolytes like potassium which can replenish what you have lost during the race.
